UHV's Burrel III named RRAC Player of the Week
WACO – Terry Burrel III had a monster week for UHV.
The Houston native had a slash line (AVG/OBP/SLG) of .583/.688/1.083 with five RBIs, two doubles and two triples as the Jaguars swept Midland 11-4 and 16-2, and split with Texas Wesleyan with an 18-4 win in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader.
For his performance, the Red River Athletic Conference named Burrel its Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 3-9. It's the third consecutive week for a UHV player to earn conference weekly honors with Brady Parker and Jonathan Jones taking home the first two Pitcher of the Week awards, and first Player of the Week nod for the Jaguars (9-2).
"God has been very good to me," Burrel said. "This is a real big honor, but to be honest, I don't win this without everybody else doing their job and being threats at the plate and on the base path. It's such a good feeling to know that the hard work I've been putting in is being recognized and an even better feeling knowing its paying off for our team."
The junior has been dangerous in the middle of UHV's lineup all season.
He's hitting .482 this season with three doubles and team-highs with two triples and six stolen bases. Burrel had a career day in the Jaguars' 18-4 win over Texas Wesleyan, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs, two triples and a double to finish a home run shy of the cycle. That extended his hit streak to four games at the time and he's hit in seven of UHV's 11 games this season.
"I'm fired for Terry to get this recognition," said head coach Jonathan Stavinoha. "He really saw the ball well last week and came up with some big time hits and good base running to help us pick up three wins. I'm excited to see how he builds on this the rest of the season."
The Jaguars open up RRAC play at home with a three-game set against University of the Southwest, starting with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
