UHV’s Julian Garcia wins final RRAC Pitcher of the Week honor of the season
WACO – For the fifth time this season, a UHV pitcher was recognized with weekly honors.
On Monday, the Red River Athletic Conference announced UHV senior right-hander Julian Garcia as its Pitcher of the Week in the 13th and final set of weekly awards after helping the Jaguars to a sweep of LSU Alexandria last week.
This is the second time this season Garcia has been recognized and the ninth weekly award earned by a UHV baseball player – the most of any team in the conference. Garcia joins teammate and fellow righty Jonathan Jones as the only UHV pitchers to double up on awards this season.
"I'm honored to win this award again," Garcia said. "It was huge for us getting the sweep going into Sterlington. We responded well as a team and went out at Riverside Stadium the right way. Our best baseball is in front of us and I'm excited to get back to work."
Garcia closed the regular season with a gem, striking out a season-high 10 batters while allowing just two hits and a walk in a 10-0, run-rule win over LSU Alexandria in the regular season finale on Saturday at Riverside Stadium.
It was the seventh win of the season for the Houston native and 21st of his career. It was also the second consecutive start with 10 strikeouts for Garcia.
"Julian has pitched his tail off all season, but especially these last two weeks," said head coach Jonathan Stavinoha. "This is a testament to the work he's put in all season. I'm excited to see what he and our team can do this week at the conference tournament."
The Jaguars (37-13, 22-8) are the No. 2 seed in this week's Red River Athletic Conference tournament at the Sterlington Sports Complex in Sterlington, Louisiana. They face University of the Southwest in the first round at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
