No. 20 A&M-Victoria baseball’s rally falls short against Nelson
BRYAN – A ninth-inning rally fell one run short for the Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team on Wednesday.
The No. 20-ranked Jaguars fell 8-7 to Nelson University at Travis Field despite Garrett Smith's multi-home run game and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate multiple times in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Smith and Antonio Benitez had multi-hit games with each collecting three hits on Wednesday as the Jaguars (5-2) out-hit Nelson 11-7.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for A&M-Victoria.
The Jaguars fell behind early, having to claw back from a 4-0 deficit after two innings before Kyle Barosh delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the second.
Nelson made it 5-1 in the fourth before the Jaguars plated four unanswered runs between the fourth and eighth innings.
Smith, who went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, had an RBI single in the fourth to start the rally for A&M-Victoria. He then homered in the sixth and eighth innings, with the latter clearing the wall in center field to tie the game at 5-5.
After allowing a three-run double in the top of the ninth and falling behind 8-5, RBIs from Smith and Hankins in the ninth made it a one-run game.
Justin Mireles got the start and went three innings before making way for Camden Farmer, who threw an inning of relief.
Brayton Cardwell made his first appearance since 2023 and threw three strong innings, allowing one hit while striking out a pair.
