Louisiana Christian
The Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team picked up an important win on Friday.
The Jaguars (12-8, 3-2) split a doubleheader with Louisiana Christian at Riverside Stadium, dropping Game 1, 5-3, before responding with an 11-1 run-rule win in Game 2.
Beck Zimmerman had a team-high four hits across both ends of the twinbill. Ty Boozer's four RBIs on Friday were the high-water mark for the team in the two games.
Game 2
A&M-Victoria bounced back in a big way after losing Game 1 with an 11-1 walk-off, run-rule win in Game 2 with Jackson Ulcak sending the Jaguar faithful home happy in the seventh inning following his pinch-hit, RBI single.
Freshman Ty Boozer opened the scoring with his first career home run, a two-run shot in the third inning. Garrett Smith followed in the fourth with a two-run single to score Jackson Purcell and Kyle Barosh.
After Louisiana Christian scored a run on a wild pitch in the fifth, the Jaguars rattled off seven unanswered runs, including six in the fifth inning following RBIs from Antonio Benitez, Beck Zimmerman (2), Roberto Olguin and Paul Bazan, Jr in the inning.
Zimmerman led the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Josiah Taylor was the only other Jaguar with a mutli-hit performance in Game 2.
Blane Zeplin struck out 10 in the victory, improving to 4-1 on the mound following a five-inning shift where he allowed the one run on six hits while walking just one batter.
Game 1
A&M-Victoria rallied for three runs in the fourth inning but could not overcome a late Louisiana Christian surge in a 5-3 loss Friday at Riverside Stadium.
Trailing 2-0, the Jaguars broke through in the fourth when Jackson Purcell singled and Jose Montanez reached after being hit by a pitch. Ty Boozer delivered the big swing, tripling to left field to score both runners and tie the game. Boozer later crossed the plate on a fielding error by the first baseman, giving A&M-Victoria a 3-2 lead. Boozer finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, accounting for much of the Jaguars' offense.
Louisiana Christian responded in the sixth, capitalizing on a two-run single and a sacrifice fly to reclaim the lead at 5-3.
Beck Zimmerman added two hits for A&M-Victoria, which totaled five hits. J. Jones (4-2) allowed five runs — four earned — over six innings, striking out six in the loss.
