Bats stay red-hot as A&M-Victoria baseball sweeps Jarvis, extends winning streak to six
Texas A&M–Victoria extended its winning streak to six games — its longest of the season — after overpowering Jarvis Christian University in a Saturday doubleheader, winning 9–0 and 17–4 on at Riverside Stadium for a second consecutive series sweep.
Across both games, the Jaguars totaled 26 runs on 21 hits, fueled by consistent pressure throughout the lineup and a decisive 10‑run sixth inning in Game 2 that broke the nightcap wide open. A&M-Victoria has outscored its opponents 79-24 during this winning streak.
The day also featured individual streaks continuing to climb. Connor Kaiser pushed his on-base streak to 19 games, and Beck Zimmerman extended his hitting streak to 10. Garrett Smith went a combined 5-for-7 with five RBI, Antonio Benitez scored seven runs on the day, and Jackson Purcell produced four hits and five RBI across the doubleheader.
The Jaguars improved to 19-9 overall and 10-2 in Red River Athletic Conference play. A&M-Victoria maintained its hold on second place in the conference standings, two games behind LSU Shreveport.
Game 1
A&M–Victoria opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning, including a double steal that brought home Antonio Benitez and an RBI single from Jose Montanez.
The Jaguars added another run in the second and two in the fifth before delivering a four‑run sixth inning highlighted by Zimmerman's three‑run double into the right‑center gap.
Starting pitcher Blane Zeplin, the back‑to‑back Red River Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, delivered another elite performance.
He threw six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts, marking his fourth double‑digit strikeout outing of the season. Zeplin allowed just two hits and no walks before handing the ball to Matthew Mejia, who closed out the four‑hit shutout.
Smith finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, Purcell added two hits and drove in a run, Zimmerman totaled three RBI, and Benitez reached base three times and scored three times.
Game 2
The second game remained competitive until the sixth inning, when the Jaguars exploded for 10 runs on six hits. It was the highest scoring inning in any game for A&M-Victoria's offense
Leading 7–4 entering the frame, the Jaguars broke the game open with an RBI double from Benitez, a run‑scoring double from Zimmerman, an RBI triple by Kaiser, an RBI single from Smith and a three‑run home run from Purcell. Later in the inning, Josiah Taylor added a run‑scoring triple to cap the surge.
On the mound, winning pitcher Jacob Baker provided a steady foundation for the offense to build upon.
Baker worked four innings, allowing seven hits and four runs with no walks and three strikeouts before turning the game over to the bullpen. His ability to limit damage early kept A&M-Victoria in front long enough for the lineup to take full control. Justin Mireles and Quinn Garcia combined for three scoreless innings in relief to finish off the victory.
Smith capped his strong day by going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Purcell drove in four. Benitez scored four times, Kaiser reached base three times and drove in two, and contributions from Montanez, Taylor and Ty Boozer helped fuel the 17–4 win.
