Game 2
Xavier (LA)
The Texas A&M University‑Victoria baseball team has found its stride at the right time.
Fresh off a decisive sweep of Jarvis Christian, the Jaguars have pieced together a six‑game winning streak powered by a red-hot offense and a pitching staff settling into rhythm.
With that winning streak, the Jaguars (19-9, 10-2 RRAC) are in second place in the Red River Athletic Conference and two-games behind defending national champion LSU Shreveport.
That momentum carries into a demanding five‑game road trip this week.
A&M-Victoria opens the week with non-conference games against NCAA Division I Texas Southern and John Melvin on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning to conference play Friday and Saturday at Xavier (La.), offering the Jaguars another chance to stretch their strongest run of the season.
Jags are hot
Over their last six games, the Jaguars have hit .383 while piling up 79 runs and 127 total bases, turning nearly every inning into a scoring opportunity.
Jackson Purcell (.600, 15 hits, 14 RBIs) has set the tone atop a lineup that's producing from every spot during this six-game stretch. Garrett Smith (.522, four home runs, 1.130 slugging) continues to be one of the team's top run‑producers, while Beck Zimmerman (.360) has delivered steady contact and timely hits.
Purcell, Smith and Ty Boozer each homered in last week's sweep of Jarvis. Smith now leads the team with eight home runs.
Boozer and Jose Montanez have added depth with matching .350 averages in the six‑game window, and Connor Kaiser has supplied both table‑setting and extra‑base power.
Those numbers mirror the team's broader season profile: a .323 average, .433 on‑base percentage and a top half of the order that has been among the most productive in the RRAC.
Streaking
A&M‑Victoria's six‑game winning streak has been built on both sides of the ball.
Jaguar pitchers have struck out 50 batters over the last 46 innings, allowing the offense to play with early leads and push games out of reach.
The lineup's consistency is reflected in several ongoing streaks: Zimmerman has hit safely in 10 straight games, Smith in nine and Purcell in seven.
Even more impressive has been the team's ability to reach base. Kaiser has been on in 19 consecutive games, while Montanez has reached in 16 straight. Zimmerman (13), Smith (11) and Purcell (11) have also kept innings alive with disciplined approaches. That blend of patience and power has made the Jaguars one of the toughest lineups in the conference to navigate.
Scouting the opponents
Texas Southern (7–9)
The Jaguars' week begins Tuesday against Texas Southern, which enters at 7–9 after dropping a SWAC series with Jackson State.
It's the fourth all‑time matchup between the programs and the first since 2015.
Texas Southern leads the series 2–1, giving A&M‑Victoria a chance to even the all‑time mark while testing itself against a Division I opponent.
John Melvin (15–9)
John Melvin arrives as one of the more quietly impressive teams on the Jaguars' schedule.
At 15–9, the Millers own signature wins over Our Lady of the Lake and LSU Alexandria and have shown they can compete with top‑end RRAC talent.
This will be the fourth all‑time meeting between the schools after A&M‑Victoria took two of three last season at Riverside Stadium.
Xavier (La.) (4–16, 2–10 RRAC)
The Jaguars close the week against Xavier (La.), which is coming off a tough series after being swept by Louisiana Christian.
The Gold Rush sit at 4–16 overall and 2–10 in conference play.
Historically, A&M‑Victoria has controlled the series, leading 11–1 all‑time, including last year's three‑game sweep in which the Jaguars outscored Xavier 35–6.
A sweep would set up a first-place matchup between the Jaguars and LSU Shreveport the following week.
