Men’s Golf finishes 5th at Texas Intercollegiate, Gratton finishes 3rd
FORT WORTH, Texas – A strong opening tournament by Brandon Gratton helped pace the Texas A&M University-Victoria men's golf team to a Top 5 finish in their first outing of the year.
The Jaguars finished fifth at Texas Wesleyan's Texas Intercollegiate at Hawks Creek Golf Club after going two-under par with a three-day total of 862 (288-290-284). They edged out Red River Athletic Conference foes Southwest and Texas A&M University-San Antonio, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Gratton was under par all week, going 71-70-66 for a nine-under 207 across the three rounds. The Edmonton, Alberta, native shared the tournament lead in birdies with 17. He made seven of those in Round 2 before carding six birdies and the second-ever albatross in school history in Round 3.
He was named to the All-Tournament team for his performance.
The Jaguars saw four of their five players post scores under par in the tournament.
Freshman Florian Simon went 74-71-74—218 (+2) to finish in a tie for 19th. Senior Lucky Boonsirat rode an under par final round to go 73-76-71—220 (+4) and finish tied for 27th.
Paul Chopin and Edgar Hinojosa finished within a stroke of each other with Chopin going 70-78-74—222 (+6) to finish in a tie for 31st. Hinojosa went 76-73-74—223 and finished tied 33rd.
The Jaguars next tournament is the Poss High Country Shootout in Ruidoso, New Mexico, Sept. 22-23.
