UHV, OLLU battle to 2-2 deadlock
One hundred and ten minutes couldn't decide the outcome Saturday as the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars and Our Lady of the Lake Saints battled to a 2-2 tie in a Red River Athletic Conference men's soccer match at the Cage.
Despite the tie, the Jaguars continue to hold a one-game lead over the Saints for the top spot in the RRAC standings. The Jaguars improved to 8-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in conference, while the Saints fell to 7-6-2 and 5-2-1 in conference.
The Jaguars had to battle from behind twice to force overtime despite outshooting the Saints 24-10 and 13-5 in shots on goal.
A.J. Gonzales put the Saints up with 53 seconds left in the first half with the first goal of the day.
Samuel Ashun (SO/McKinney) tied the contest for the Jaguars in the 73rd minute off an assist from Patrick Coto (FR/Houston-TX), but five minutes later the Saints were back in front off an Adrian Delgado goal.
Reece Hannigan (SR/Sutton Surrey, England) gave the Jaguars new hope with 53 seconds left in regulation with an unassisted goal forcing overtime.
Neither team could find the net in the two 10 minute overtime periods to wrap of the 2-2 tie.
Espen Hansen (JR/Kristiansand, Norway) paced the Jaguars with five shots, while Adrian Mendoza (JR/Houston, TX) fired off four, with Hannigan and Brian Foulger (SR/Leighton Buzzard, England) each putting up three. Adrian Rodriguez (FR/McAllen, TX) and Cristian Garcia (FR/Houston, TX) each added two shots for the Jaguars.
During halftime, seniors Hannigan, Hansen, Foulger, Kyle Davison-Gordon (JR/Leighton Buzzard, England) and Samuel Lopez (SR/Houston, TX) were recognized.
The Jaguars will be back in action Thursday when they face off against Texas A&M-Texarkana in a 3:30 p.m. match in Texarkana.
