UHV's Nunez named to All-Region team
The United Soccer Coaches recently named UHV's Danny Nunez to the NAIA Men's All-West Region team.
The senior from La Union, El Salvador, was one of 14 players honored and one of three Red River Athletic Conference athletes named to the team.
"It means a lot," Nunez said. "I put a lot of effort in during the season and tried to help my team. At the same time, I was getting stats and was fortunate enough to get this honor on the All-Region team."
The 5-foot-8 defender appeared in 16 of UHV's 17 matches this year with 15 starts.
Nunez contributed a team-leading five goals and three assists from the Jaguars back line as the team reached the RRAC semifinals in 2022. He was an All-RRAC first team selection this year with Callum Smith.
During two years with UHV, Nunez has made 28 appearances with 27 starts. During the 2021 campaign, he had three assists.
In his 28 appearances, Nunez contributed to a defense that allowed an average of 0.93 goals per game.
"We are very proud of Danny's All-Region recognition," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "Danny has been a major factor in our back line and team success since his arrival to UHV. He's a fearless defender and led by example on the field with his tenacious style of defending. He has raised the bar high for another right back to fill his shoes."
Nunez joins women's soccer player Kalyca Keramidis as Jaguars who received All-Region Honors this year.
The Salvadorian said his best memory at UHV is meeting people from across the world.
"Meeting new people on the field and off the field, from all over – Europe, Central and South America," Nunez said. "They're brothers I'll have for my whole life."
