An unlikely hero provided the decisive goal for the Texas A&M University-Victoria men's soccer team on Thursday.
Freshman midfielder Chris Mendez came off the bench capitalized on a turnover in the attacking third to blast the ball into the top corner in the 28th minute, helping lift the Jaguars to a 1-0 win over Huston-Tillotson.
It was the first career goal for the El Paso native as A&M-Victoria (4-2) extended its winning streak to four matches.
The goal came seconds after Hans-Kristian Grotting had what looked to be his first goal disallowed.
Mendez led the team with three shots on Thursday. He and junior Yahir Pena had the Jaguars' two shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Tyler Kaeppeli made a pair of saves to earn his 19th career shutout, tying the record set by Brian Redmond (2014-16). The Vernon, British Columbia, native now boasts 150 saves in his career.
The Jaguars will close out non-conference play on Saturday at home against St. Thomas (TX) at 3:30 p.m.
