UHV's Reyna named RRAC co-defensive player
One of the most consistent players for the University of Houston-Victoria softball team, senior Ashley Reyna (SR/Harlingen, TX) committed just four errors in 164 chances at first base this season and led the team offensively as well as she was named the Red River athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday.
Her 0.976 fielding percentage was the best on the Jaguars' squad amongst the starters, she shared the award with Our Lady of the Lake's Madison Nunn.
Reyna was one of five Jaguars recognized Wednesday with the release of the RRAC Softball All-Conference Team.
Reyna was also named to the RRAC first team, along with teammates Marisa Mendoza (SR/Houston, TX) and Kaylle Acosta (FR/Sinton, TX). Cameron Cowan (FR/Shiner, TX) was named to the RRAC second team and Kelsey Tidrick (SR/Port Lavaca, TX) was recognized on the RRAC Champions of Character Team.
Reyna compiled a .407 regular season average with a .605 slugging percentage and a .435 on-base percentage. She had 18 RBI, 11 runs scored and a team-leading 12 doubles and two triples.
Mendoza, played center field for the Jaguars and compiled a .367 batting average. She has scored 17 runs with three RBI, a double and a triple.
Acosta, a multi-position player for the Jaguars, compiled a.318 batting average with a team-leading 19 RBI. She scored eight runs and had five doubles.
Cowan was one of the top UHV pitchers as she compiled a 7-5 record with a 2.39 ERA in 18 games. She tossed 96.2 innings allowing 45 runs on 86 hits and 15 walks, while striking out 70.
Regular season co-champion LSU-Alexandria placed seven players of the first team, followed by Texas A&M-Texarkana with four, Our Lady of the Lake and UHV three each and Jarvis Christian two.
LSUA's Bailey Hughes was named the RRAC Player of the Year, while A&M-Texarkana's Dorrie Cormier was selected as the RRAC Pitcher of the Year. Cormier's teammate Anna Westberry was named the Newcomer of the Year, while A&M-Texarkana coach Marie Stone was named the Coach of the Year.
