Softball Weekly Report
UHV swept it's weather delayed Red River Athletic Conference opening series on Monday and will look to extend their winning streak to three games as they travel to Orange Beach, Alabama this weekend.
The Jags beat Our Lady of Lake 1-0 and 5-2 to improve to 6-2 on the season.
In game one, Ashley Reyna (SR/Harlingen, TX) laced a walk-off base hit to right-center in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Jags the win. Her game winning hit came with two outs and the bases loaded scoring Cameron Cowan (SO/Shiner, TX) from third for the game's only run. Reyna had two of the Jags six hits in the game.
Cowan went the distance in the circle, giving up three hits and striking out three Saints batters to improve to 3-1 on the year. The Saints didn't have a base hit until the sixth inning when they had two singles, but Cowan was able to get a ground ball out end the inning.
The Jags jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game two, when Secilia Lopez (FR/Edinburg, TX) hit a two run single to score Cameron Steen (SO/Victoria, TX) and Brianna Leon (SR/Houston, TX). Kaylle Lopez (SO/Sinton, TX) added a run scoring single to add to the lead and plate the eventual game winner.
Steen scattered eight hits through six innings giving up both runs before Alexi Wade (FR/Granger, TX) came on with two on and nobody out to shut down the Saints threat and pick up her first save of the year.
Ashley Reyna went two for three with two RBI and raised her average on the season to .458. She also leads the team with 11 runs batted in.
The Jags will play in the Gulf Coast Classic this weekend in Orange Beach, Alabama. The Jags last won the tournament in 2012.
Softball returns home to face University of the Southwest in Conference play next Friday at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex beginning at 3 p.m.
