The UHV softball team is looking to close out the regular season strong.
The Jaguars (23-19, 15-9) host University of the Southwest in a 1 p.m. Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday in the team's home finale and penultimate series of the season.
UHV is coming off a weekend sweep of Louisiana Christian and Xavier (La.) last week. The meetings between the Jaguars and Mustangs (11-31, 7-17) are a rematch from a doubleheader on March 21
"We need to play our best softball now," said head coach Lindsey Ortiz. "With the conference tournament coming up, we need to put our best softball on the field so we can go challenge for the conference tournament. That starts this weekend and we're excited to keep this momentum going."
Senior first baseman Claire Blinka etched her name in UHV's history books last week with three multi-hit games, breaking Ashley Winegeart's previous record of 53. Her .433 batting average ranks fourth in the RRAC and her eight home runs this season are tied for fourth in the conference.
She was one of a number of seniors to step up on senior weekend, specifically at the plate.
Jayce Bolin hit .500 with three RBIs, two doubles and a triple over the four games last weekend. Allison Snedeker had a walk-off single in a 7-6 win over Xavier in extra innings on Saturday, capping a .308 weekend with a pair of RBIs.
"I'm super happy with how they performed last week," Ortiz said. "Each of them stepped up in a big way when we needed them to. They've been playing really well recently and I'm looking forward to seeing them keeping that going this weekend."
Graduate senior Hope Quinones delivered two strong performances to earn a pair of wins, bringing her season total to eight. She struck out nine batters over 11.1 innings of work last week.
Alexi Wade also earned her first save of the season in Game 1 against Xavier, throwing 2.2 innings of shutout relief behind Quinones.
Audrie Sayas and Jocelyne Galvan also each had a win in the circle for the Jaguars.
"Our pitchers have really grown into a well-rounded staff this year," Ortiz said. "That's exciting at this time of year because now we can lean on them for matchups and put ourselves in the best position to win games. They did well last weekend and I want them to keep that momentum up so we can close the regular season strong."
