Jags roar back to down TAMUSA in RRAC Tourney opener
PINEVILLE, La. – The Cardiac Cats were at it again.
UHV softball rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take down Texas A&M-San Antonio 7-4 in the first round of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday at Louisiana Christian's Wildcat Field. The Jaguars scored four runs in the fifth inning to take their first lead of the game.
It was the seventh come-from-behind win for the Jaguars this season.
"I wasn't happy with the way we started and the way we showed up this morning," said head coach Lindsey Ortiz. "Postseason is tricky and you never know what the dynamic is going to be. But I think they made a conscious adjustment halfway through. If nothing else, this team has proven that they're gritty. We've had a recent stretch where they've proven they can come from behind, they can do the tough things. So, I think they kind of fell back on that confidence and did a job."
Daizie Fuentez delivered the game-tying RBI in the fifth with a single to drive in Allison Snedeker. The Victoria native also drove in the Jaguars' opening runs of the game on a two-run, ground rule double in the fourth inning.
Fuentez was one of four UHV (28-19) players with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored against TAMUSA (21-26).
Allison Snedeker made it a 4-3 game with an RBI single in the fifth ahead of Fuentez before Sarah Cortez put UHV up for good with a two-run single in the same inning.
Senior Claire Blinka capped the scoring with her 13th home run of the season and fifth in as many games with a shot to right-center in the sixth. She went 3-for-4 at the plate to extend her hitting streak to eight games.
"I think it was just our energy," Blinka said. "When we're up in the dugout and having fun, things generally go our way. So, we were just having fun and playing one at-bat after another. Just having fun together.
"I just want to do whatever I can for my team and keep the momentum up. I couldn't do it without them behind me."
Jocelyne Galvan improved to 7-1 in the circle after hurling four innings of shutout relief behind starter Audrie Sayas. The Aransas Pass native allowed just one hit and two walks to the 15 batters she faced.
UHV advances to the winner's bracket, where they will face the winner of Our Lady of the Lake and Southwest tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Wildcat Field.
