OKLAHOMA CITY – The University of Houston-Victoria softball team dropped a close decision in its opening game of the 2025 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket.
The Jaguars fell 2-1 to Morningside (IA) on Monday at Oklahoma City University's Ann Lacy Stadium.
With the loss, UHV (29-22) will face the loser of the William Carey and Missouri Baptist game in an elimination game at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
After falling behind in the top of the first inning on a leadoff home run by Paige Schuster, senior first baseman Claire Blinka tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double in the third to score Brianna Strother.
The game's only other run came home in the fourth inning for the Mustangs (34-17) on an error by UHV.
Blinka had two of UHV's five hits, marking the 60th career multi-hit game for the Port Lavaca native.
Audrie Sayas suffered the loss despite allowing just two runs – only one of which was earned – on six hits with four strikeouts. Hope Quinones came on in relief of an injured Sayas in the sixth inning and tossed 1.2 innings of shutout softball with only one hit allowed. The UHV pitching duo did not yield a walk in the loss.
