TYLER – The Texas A&M University-Victoria softball team opened Red River Athletic Conference play with a sweep on Friday.
The Jaguars beat Texas College by scores of 13-3 (5 inn.) and 5-4 (8 inn.).
With the wins, A&M-Victoria improves to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Alyssa Carter had a team-high four RBIs on Friday. The Jaguars managed 19 hits across the twinbill to improve to 45-0 all-time against Texas College.
A&M-Victoria struck out 14 batters across the two games, as well.
Game 1
A big first inning helped the Jaguars set the tone, plating eight runs and sending 12 batters to the plate.
Alyssa Carter's RBI double opened the flood gates in the second at-bat of the game by scoring Khamryn Werdlow. She would add two more RBIs on a single to center field to make it 7-0.
A&M-Victoria scored 10 unanswered runs through the first three offensive innings.
Angelina Morales provided one of many highlights with a two-run home run, her first homer of the year, to center field in the fifth before Kelsey Perez capped the game's scoring in the same inning by scoring on a wild pitch.
Morales saw her team-leading batting average climb up to .480 after going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs in Game 1. She also has 11 RBIs through 10 games and has hit safely in eight of the 10 games and boasts four multi-hit games this year.
Carter and Fayth Hoover also had multi-hit performances in the run-rule victory in Game 1.
Haley Noska picked up the win in the circle, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out a season-high six batters in her longest outing of the season.
Game 2
The Jaguars had a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth thanks to a home run by Cristela Trevino. Taylor Allen, Alysa Perez and Emily Mayo drove in the first three runs of the game between the first and second innings.
Perez led the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Jaguars.
But Texas College battled back to tie the game with three runs in the fifth inning and eventually force extra innings, the first such game for the Jaguars this season.
An error on a single by Kelsey Perez enabled Fayth Hoover to score the decisive run in the top of the eighth.
Jocelyne Galvan improved to 2-0 in the circle after striking out a career-high eight batters over eight innings of work.
Next up
The Jaguars and Steers close out the weekend series with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. The first game wraps up the conference series while the second is a non-conference game.
