A&M-Victoria softball looks to continue momentum with series at Southwest
The Texas A&M University-Victoria softball team is gearing up for its longest road trip of the conference schedule.
The Jaguars (17-10, 8-4) head to Hobbs, New Mexico, for a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series against University of the Southwest. The series opens with a 12 p.m. MT doubleheader on Friday with the series finale slated for 12 p.m. MT on Saturday.
A&M-Victoria picked up a three-game sweep of Xavier (La.) over the weekend, outscoring the Gold Nuggets 25-13 across the three games.
With the sweep, the Jaguars maintained their position in fourth place in the conference standings at the midway point of the conference schedule.
Freshmen leading the way
A pair of freshmen helped lead the way for A&M-Victoria's sweep last week.
Right-handed pitcher Madelyn Butler earned RRAC Pitcher of the Week honors after earning her first two collegiate wins.
The Leander native started in Game 2 against Xavier and turned in a three-hit gem for her first-career victory. Butler retired 17 of the first 20 batters she faced while striking out a season-high three batters.
She returned to the circle the next day, throwing 1.2 innings of relief behind Haley Noska to earn the win out of the bullpen. She allowed just one run on four hits to get the Jaguars their third straight win.
Offensively, Cristela Trevino has been a consistent presence at the plate in her first year with the program. That was evident last week as she went 7-for-11 with six RBIs and a double to help the Jaguars secure the sweep.
The Alice native leads the team in hits (32), batting average (.438), RBIs (26) and home runs (3). She ranks fifth in the RRAC in average and RBIs.
That's helped the Jaguars hit .328 as a team, as well.
Scouting the Mustangs
USW comes into the weekend with a 4-18 record overall and a 2-10 mark in conference play.
The Mustangs earned their first conference wins of the season by taking two of three games from Texas College.
All-time, A&M-Victoria owns a 25-3 edge in the series with Southwest after winning three of four games last season.
