Jags rally for second place finish at UHV Fall Classic
The UHV women's golf team used a big second day to take second place at the UHV Fall Classic on Tuesday at the Victoria Country Club.
The Jaguars made the biggest improvement in the field, shaving 14 strokes from their first round score to shoot a 333 to finish with a two-round total of 680 (347-333) to finish just six strokes behind Our Lady of the Lake.
Senior Mia Lerma (85-80—165) and junior Emmily Bickelmann (87-78—165) led the charge for UHV finishing in a three-way tie for third.
Bickelmann's nine-stroke improvement from Round 1 was the largest in the field. Her three birdies were second-most in the field.
"I'm super proud of them," said head coach Garrett Adair. "The girls, they're at that hump they need to get over. (Mia and Emmily) tend to play well, but we need to get everyone to be more consistent. I think of few of them had their C games, but to finish six back of OLLU, who we're always kind of chasing, while playing some average golf is very inspiring. Hopefully, we can take that next step."
Caitlyn Niemietz (86-85—171) and Kaitlin Lopez (89-90—179) each turned in Top 15 finishes. Niemietz, a senior from Cibolo, finished 11th while Lopez, a sophomore from San Antonio, finished 15th.
Cecelia Niemietz shot a 94 on Tuesday to finish 24th with a two-round total of 187.
Adair credited the work of first-year assistant coach Taylor Dedmen for the women's team's play this week.
"Coach Taylor has been a big help with the girls," Adair said. "She's helping them think through more on the course and learning how to turn sixes into fives, and just being more consistent from top to bottom. I think that's been key."
Tuesday concluded UHV's fall schedule. The Jaguars will announce their spring schedule at a later date.
