Pate in Top 5 after first round of CAC Tournament
HOBBS, New Mexico – Texas A&M University-Victoria women's golfer Madeline Pate put together a steady round to find herself in the Top 5 after the first round of the Continental Athletic Conference Tournament.
The sophomore used three birdies to card an opening-round 82 at the Par 72 Rockwind Community Links. She's tied for fifth and sits just seven shots off the lead held by Cindy Coira of the University of Victoria (British Columbia). She had just two holes worse than bogey on Monday.
That helped the Jaguars sit fifth as a team following the first round with a team score of 409.
Kaitlin Lopez shot a 95 in the opening round to sit in a tie for 20th. The senior from San Antonio birdied the Par 3 17th hole and had a trio of pars on her scorecard Monday.
Laney Glass shot 97 in the opening round to finish tied for 23rd. She birdied the Par 5 fifth hole and was the lone player in the tournament to do so in the opening round.
Tindra Bergholtz and Miriam Ballart finished 25th and 26th respectively to round out the Jaguars' scores on Monday. Bergholtz parred the Par 3 eighth hole as A&M-Victoria carded 12 pars as a team in the first round.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday with Round 2 at 8:30 a.m.
