Three Jags named 2023 Daktronics NAIA Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athletes
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The NAIA recognized three UHV women's soccer players on the 2023 Daktronics Scholar-Athlete list released on Friday, Nov. 24.
Jasmine Garcia, Meghan Matcek and Maja Eriksson represented the Jaguars on the list of 1,443 student-athletes from across the country. To be nominated, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended one full year at said institution.
"Our programs are extremely proud of the academic performances of these athletes," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "It speaks volumes to their pursuit of academic excellence during their time at UHV. Our assistant coaches play a major role in the success of our student-athletes by conducting timely grade checks, scheduling extra assistance if needed and organizing student hall if needed. This recognition should inspire their teammates to pursue similar awards with their time as student-athletes here at UHV."
Matcek, a senior midfielder from Marble Falls, is pursuing her bachelor's degree in psychology. Matcek was also a 2022 Scholar-Athlete honoree. She's been named to the Dean's List Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022 and Spring 2023, and is the Vice President of Phi Kappa Phi. This season, Matcek appeared in 14 matches with four starts and seven shots.
Eriksson, a sophomore midfielder from Trollhattan, Sweden, is pursuing a degree in kinesiology. She made 13 appearances with three starts for the Jaguars in 2023 and provided two assists.
Garcia, a senior goalkeeper from La Mirada, California, will graduate in December with her bachelor's degree in psychology and was a Fall 2022 Dean's List honoree. She made one appearance for UHV in 2023, holding Huston-Tillotson scoreless in 12 minutes of play.
