The Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team is back at home this week.
The No. 20-ranked Jaguars open a three-game series with former Red River Athletic Conference foe Huston-Tillotson, starting Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday.
A&M-Victoria (6-5) is looking to bounce back after two losses to close out the South Texas Shuffle last week.
"I'm looking for a competitive nature," Stavinoha said. "I want our guys to come in and start coming together as one team and buying into the little things. That's having great (at-bats), to pounding the zone and hitting your spots, and knowing what it takes to win. I want our guys to come out and have fun, and play with energy. If we can get back to that this weekend, we're going to be really good.
Leadoff spark
Junior shortstop Antonio Benitez has helped get A&M-Victoria's offense going from the top of the order.
The Carolina, Puerto Rico, native leads the RRAC in batting average among qualified players, hitting .486 with nine RBIs and stolen bases, which ranks third in the RRAC.
He has hit safely in nine of the 11 games for A&M-Victoria, including seven multi-hit games. Benitez has also put together an 11-game on-base streak.
That's helped the Jaguars hit .297 as a team with Connor Kaiser, Beck Zimmerman and Trevor Berger hitting over .300. A&M-Victoria is averaging 6.3 runs per game offensively.
Last time out
The Jaguars saw a seventh inning rally fall short in an 8-3 loss to Doane (Neb.) on Saturday, Feb. 7.
A&M-Victoria scored a run in each of the final three innings thanks to RBIs from Benitez, Xavier Ortega and Landon Robinson.
The Jaguars had the tying run in the on-deck circle after Robinson's bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning, but once again stranded the bases loaded.
Jackson Purcell had a pair of hits in the loss. Kaiser, Zimmerman and Robinson each had one hit.
Hello, old friend
This weekend will mark the 53rd, 54th, and 55th meetings all-time between the Rams (7-3) and Jaguars, who hold a 46-6 edge in the all-time series dating back to 2008.
A&M-Victoria came from behind to win the first meeting this season, 13-8, on Jan. 28 at Riverside. Beck Zimmerman delivered the go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning and the Jaguars never looked back.
Matthew Mejia was the winning pitcher that day after tossing three innings of relief.
Former Jaguar Chase Almendarez has Huston-Tillotson on a six-game winning streak after a 3-2 win over Our Lady of the Lake on Tuesday.
