Boozer delivers in first career start as No. 20 A&M-Victoria downs Huston-Tillotson
A one-hour, 35-minute weather delay and heavy fog didn't hold the Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team back on Saturday.
The No. 20-ranked Jaguars held off Huston-Tillotson's ninth-inning rally to earn a 5-4 win at Riverside Stadium.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for A&M-Victoria (7-5), but extended their winning streak in the all-time series with the Rams (7-4) to six games.
Antonio Benitez and Roberto Olguin led the way with two hits apiece as the Jaguars scattered seven hits against Huston-Tillotson. Benitez has now reached base safely in each of the first 12 games this season.
Ty Boozer had a team-high two RBIs in the win. Benitez and Connor Kaiser each had an RBI, as well. Kaiser drove in Benitez on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to put A&M-Victoria in front for good.
Freshman standouts
Boozer led the production of A&M-Victoria's standout freshmen in his first collegiate start.
The Texarkana native delivered a go-ahead, two-run double in the fourth to put the Jaguars up 2-1 at the time.
On top of that, Beck Zimmerman was 1-for-2 with three walks to extend his on-base streak to 12 games.
Strong pitching performances
Seniors Jonathan Jones and Matthew Mejia combined for a dominant pitching performance on Saturday.
Jones went seven innings in his fourth start of the season, striking out a season-high nine batters while letting up two runs on five hits with just one walk to improve to 3-1 this season.
Mejia earned his second save of the season with two innings of relief behind Jones. The Pearland native struck out two while allowing just two runs on three hits and two walks.
Key moment
Huston-Tillotson looked like it was set to take the lead in the fifth inning as Trey Garza delivered an RBI triple.
It looked as though it could've been an inside-the-park home run after the slick center field grass caused redshirt freshman Trevor Berger to slip and the ball rolled all the way to the center-field wall.
But the Columbus native combined with Benitez and Olguin to cut down Garza at the plate and keep the game at 2-2.
Next up
The two teams will wrap up the series with a 12 p.m. doubleheader. La Mexicana and Sweeter Than Life food trucks will be on hand for concessions.
