Chambers named RRAC Player of the Week, NAIA Softball All-Star Reserve
WACO – Kenzie Chambers is enjoying one of the best runs of form in the nation right now and is getting recognition for it.
The junior from Grand Prairie hit .729 with nine RBIs, a home run and 11 stolen bases in six games last week as the UHV softball team, which is receiving votes in the national rankings, went 6-0 against Texas A&M-San Antonio, Jarvis Christian and Texas College.
On Monday, the Red River Athletic Conference named Chambers its Player of the Week for the week of April 1-7. NAIA SB, a podcast covering softball at the NAIA level, also announced the catcher to its NAIA Softball All-Star Game reserves.
"I'm very honored to be recognized this week," Chambers said. "But I'm just happy I was able to do my job for the team. We have a lot of girls who can make things happen and I didn't want to let them down."
Chambers also set, tied or challenged a number of records last week.
In a 9-4 win over Texas College on Saturday, the catcher stole five bases, one off the single-game record of six she set against Xavier (La.) in March. Her five hits against the Steers in the same game tied the single-game record.
With her 11 stolen bases, she set a new record for single-season stolen bases with 45.
Right now, she's riding a seven-game hitting streak in which she's hitting .750 (18-24). Her .538 average this season leads the conference and ranks third nationally. She's tied for second nationally in stolen bases.
"I am thrilled that Kenzie has received this much deserved recognition for her performance this week," said UHV head coach Lindsey Ortiz. "She is such a catalyst in our lineup and it is so fun to watch her play the game. Her competitive nature drives our team and I'm excited to see her continue to build off of the momentum she has created."
