Nearly 5,200 miles from her home in Borlange, Sweden, freshman Alva Klockare has found her groove with the UHV women's soccer team.
The midfielder/defender leads the Jaguars (6-2-0, 3-2-0) in assists with four. But she had a career day on Saturday in UHV's 2-0 win over Red River Athletic Conference foe Huston-Tillotson, picking up her first career goal thanks to an assist from Trine Stenderup-Jorgensen and adding an assist on Kyleigh Spree-Kolos' brace.
Klockare credits her teammates for helping her adjust to life stateside.
"My teammates always push me to do new things, challenge myself and step outside of my comfort zone," Klockare said. "They've helped me get comfortable in a new position and I really appreciate it."
Klockare's performance also helped the Jaguars get back on track in RRAC play after a pair of losses to LSU Shreveport and Texas A&M-Texarkana, who are both atop the conference standings with 15 points.
Heading into this week's conference games against University of the Southwest (3-5-1, 1-5-0) on Thursday, and Paul Quinn College (0-6-1, 0-5-1) on Saturday, the Jaguars are in eighth place with the top eight teams making the RRAC Tournament.
The Jaguars hold a 9-4-1 edge in the all-time series with the Mustangs after a 1-1 draw in Hobbs, New Mexico, last year. UHV is 8-0-0 all-time against the Tigers after a 5-0 win in Dallas last season.
"We've just got to prepare for a tough game," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "Southwest is a scrappy team and they've got some good players. For us, we've just got to concentrate on what we've been doing well and be well-prepared for them."
Klockare became the 12th different Jaguar to score a goal with her first one last Saturday.
Spree-Kolos has set the team's pace with six goals, a team-high mark, and two assists this season, which also has the Victoria product leading the team in points with 14.
The ability to create chances from anywhere on the field is something UHV has built confidence in throughout the season.
"Confidence-wise, it shows anybody's willing to put it in the back of the net," said senior forward Estelle Flanagan, who has scored three goals this season. "Moving forward, that just shows not just Kyleigh, me or Kaydee Cox – our strikers – can contribute. Our midfielders and defenders can definitely put one in the back of the net. It shows we have the drive and want to score, and anyone's capable of it."
Saturday's game vs. Paul Quinn is UHV's annual Pink Out game and fans are encouraged to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
