The Texas A&M University-Victoria women's soccer team enters a pivotal time this week.
As the Jaguars (7-3-4, 4-2-2) prepare for this week's games at Texas A&M-San Antonio, on Thursday, and at home against Our Lady of the Lake, on Saturday, they currently sit in fourth place in the Red River Athletic Conference – the final position to host an RRAC Quarterfinal – and one point clear of both OLLU (7-4-2, 4-2-1) and Texas A&M-Texarkana (9-4-2, 4-3-1).
With three matches remaining, head coach Kimberly Uetrecht has stressed the importance of the Jaguars playing their game down the stretch.
"We want to do the things that make us definitively A&M-Victoria soccer," Uetrecht said. "We want to be strong in our communication and effort together. I think that's going to be very key, coming out as a team, doing everything as a team and tackling the challenges as a team. We can't over-emphasize our togetherness and ability to accomplish things as a team."
After last week's results, including the first-ever result against Xavier (La.), the Jaguars rank second in the RRAC defensively with a 1.07 goals allowed average.
That number was aided by A&M-Victoria's defensive masterclass in the scoreless draw against Xavier. It was the fifth shutout of the year for the Jaguars. Junior goalkeeper Jamie Noriega made six saves in the game as the back line of Rosa Reyes, Cheyenne Grant, Miriam Ballart, Ariana Briones and Yuvier Borjas held the Gold Nuggets scoreless for just the third time this season.
They will lean on that identity this week as they look to pick up two wins.
"It's definitely going to be crucial to our success, having a strong back line that communicates well and moves together," Uetrecht said. "I think, going into this week, they have to be especially focused on having strong communication coming from those center backs out to the rest of the team."
Thursday's meeting with A&M-San Antonio will be the fifth meeting all-time between the two sides, which are coincidently nicknamed the Jaguars. But it will be the first meeting since the two athletic departments announced the official rivalry series "The Battle of the Big Cats."
"With the name change, it's nice to have a rival kind of built in," Uetrecht said. "These are big games coming up and it would be nice to represent A&M-Victoria well."
Saturday's match with OLLU is Senior Day with Reyes, Abree Fry and Vanessa Bevalian being recognized for their contributions to the program at halftime. Saturday will also have a Halloween-theme to it and fans are encouraged to dress up in Halloween costumes for the match.
